What is argan oil used for and how is it applied to the hair?

If you are a regular reader of All Things Hairyou will know very well that in the newsroom we are fascinated by hair oils. Nonetheless, the benefits of argan oil have made it one of our absolute favourites.

Also known as “liquid gold”, this is extracted from the seeds of the fruit of the argan tree, a species endemic to Morocco. When it is produced sustainably and with fair trade, it comes from fruits collected from the ground, which helps prevent overexploitation and the threat of deforestation.

Whether in its pure state or through commercial formulas, this fabulous oil has proven to be an essential element for healthy and radiant hair.

If you still lack reasons to adopt it as your favorite beauty elixir, after knowing what it can do for your hair, you will not think twice.

Moisturizes the hair

Argan oil offers high amounts of oleic and linoleic acids, making it extremely rich and moisturizing. Both components are helpful in maintaining a healthy skin barrier because they feed the scalp with essential fatty acids such as omega-3, 6 and 9, which our bodies do not produce.

The Vitamin E in argan oil helps to maintain the youth of the hair and eliminates free radicals. Preserves melanin while preventing damage to the outer cuticle of the hair shaft.

As it is a completely natural product, you can include it daily in your hair routine, as long as you do it in small amounts and limit yourself to using it only from the middle to the ends. However, everything will depend on the format in which you use it and the amount you apply.

The best argan oil for hair is the one in its purest form. To identify it, make sure that it has been extracted by first cold pressing. In this case, you will notice that it retains a bright golden color and is unscented, qualities that confirm its authenticity.

Also look for it to be labeled for cosmetic use and packaged in a dark glass jar. You can apply it from the middle to the ends on dry hair, before or after styling it.

If you are going to wear it loose, mix two drops with mousse or your favorite styling cream. Although, if you are going to pick it up, you can apply a drop with the palms of your hands on the most rebellious areas.

Argan oil hair mask

You can combine pure argan oil with other nourishing ingredients, such as Castor oil or coconut, to make a homemade mask.

  • Using your hands, massage eight to 10 drops of argan oil into your hair and scalp. Adjust the amount according to the length of your hair.
  • Continue massaging for 10 minutes, making sure your hair is covered from root to tip.
  • Wrap your hair in a towel or shower cap and leave it on for several hours.
  • Wash your hair and style as usual.

Heat protectant for hair with argan oil

Unlike other natural oils that start to break down at 350°F or below, argan oil can withstand higher temperatures (smoke point or 400°F), so you can safely use it as a thermal protectordue to its antioxidant properties.

Daily use of argan oil is generally safe, however considering your hair type is key to avoiding unwanted effects such as excess oiliness and wet texture. Moderate its use and avoid it on the scalp if yours tends to be oily or if your hair is very straight and fine.

Also, whenever you use it, remember to wash your hair and make sure it doesn’t leave any residue.
